Für den Unterricht lässt sich das Interview wunderbar verwerten: Tourismus, air travel, the future of travel sind nur drei mögliche Themengebiete. Auch ist das Interview, wie viele Sendungen, die von NPR kommen, in sehr gut verständlichem Englisch gehalten.

Eine eher klassische Einstiegsübung ist SchülerInnen die Frage “What did you pack for yout last holiday?” beantworten zu lassen und dann zu bewerten. (What you could have left at home.)

Als follow-up Activity bietet sich an mit SchülerInnen eine packing list zu erstellen, entweder in Gruppen oder einzeln. Eine weitere (evtl. recht amüsante) Möglichkeit eine Activity für die Listening Comprehension zu gestalten, wäre zum Beispiel auch andere “Ideen” als das bundle wrapping sammeln zu lassen.
Auf jeden Fall ein weiteres interessantes Interview aus der serie All things considered.

Aus gegebenem Anlass habe ich jetzt selbst zum Lernen einer neuen Sprache begonnen. Türkisch. Meine ersten Türkisch Stunden sind hinter mir. Macht Spaß wieder mal auf der anderen Seite zu stehen und Hikmet ist ein äußerst geduldiger Lehrer.

Ich hatte Vokker bisher nur dazu verwendet mit SchülerInnen im Live Online Unterricht Wörter zu wiederholen. Das geht wunderbar über Drag & Drop.

Jetzt verwende ich das Werkzeug auch dazu, die Wörter von meinem Türkisch Unterricht zusammenzuschreiben und sie als eigene Lektionen auch anderen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Über die Funktion Drucken lassen sich Vokabellisten bzw. Flashcards ausdrucken. So könnten zum Beispiel auch SchülerInnen kollaborativ Wortlisten zu Büchern erstellen und diese dann on- oder offline, je nach Präferenz, lernen.

Für die Eingabe neuer Wörter stehen übrigens Eingabehilfen für unzählige Sprachen zur Verfügung. Die Handy Funktion ist kostenpflichtig, es lassen sich über diese auch Karteikarten aufs Mobiltelefon schicken.

Ich hänge zwei Dateien an in denen ich meine ersten türkischen Wörter und Phrasen festgehalten habe. Wer meine öffentliche Lektion 1 online einsehen möchte muss sich erst registrieren. Es lassen sich weitere tolle Wortlisten finden.

Beim Schönbrunn Laufen heute – ist jetzt modern – ist mir dann auch der Gedanke gekommen, dass sich die “Think before you post Videos” eigentlich ganz gut für eine present tense Übung verwendet werden können. Sie sind kurz und lassen sich ,denke ich mir, auch ganz gut beschreiben. Da kann man dann auch eine schöne Partner Übung machen. Watch the video…jeweils unterschiedliche Videos. Und dann erzählen. Die Message ist ja am Schluss ganz deutlich, trotzdem kann sich evtl. eine ganz interessante Diskussion ergeben. Und ich finde ja auch die Videos gut und zeitgemäß gemacht. Auf der Webseite Don’t believe the Type gibt es die Videos und weitere Public Service Ads zum Download. Falls man YouTube nicht im Klassenzimmer hat oder zur Integration in Moodle.

Ich bin im Zuge der Arbeit mit dem Buch wieder auf die frei zugänglichen SparkNotes gekommen und habe auch eine recht bescheidene fill-in Übung dazu produziert. Da es bei der Zusammenfassung bzw. beim Erzählen der einzelnen Kapitel immer wieder zu Problemen mit den Zeiten kam, wollte ich diese Übung auch nur dazu verwenden, aufzuzeigen, wie eine zeitlich einheitliche (present tense) Zusammenfassung aussehen kann.

Muss ich im herbst dann gleich ausprobieren, wie das Buch ankommt. Den Internet Angeboten nach zu schließen, hat das Buch aber schon weiten Einzug in die ESL/EFL Klassenzimmer gehalten.

Video description Fair Trade is about helping small family farmers in developing countries get organized and develop their business skills in order to tap into the world market directly.

Björk’s Triumph of a Heart, e.g., in which the Islandic singer sings about the path the blood takes to the heart and how the heart then triumphs and works incessantly. In the worksheet I have included a diagram of a body to a gap fill text. Since the lyrics part is relatively short and easy, this could be used with a lower intermediate class learning about the human body.

Date Rape by the Californian band Sublime tells the story of a woman who is date raped and then reports the crime to the police. The guy ends up in jail. The end part of the song, I must admit contains inappropriate language, but the message in the song is strong and powerful and the popularity of the band among younger people really helps hammering home the point. I have already used this song in the classroom. I cut up the lines of the first half of the songs and then mixed them up; I had the students put the original text together while the CD was playing. This worked very well. After playing the song two or three or four times a group had finished first and they were awarded a small prize. Afterwards we went over the lyrics and discussed the topic of date rape.

I did the same cutting-up technique with Tom Russel’s Muhamed Ali, an older song, which I have recently rediscovered, but then used the song as a starting point for a websearch on Muhamed Ali, boxing and his life (The Hurricane, Million Dollar Baby, Ali and Islam, illness…)

Another older song that I have used in class is Billy Bragg’s To have or to have not. I have used this rebellious tune to end a session on unemployment. This worked quite well and triggered off a discussion on values and education.

I also like replacing correct lyrics with wrong ones and then have the students see if they can proofread the lyrics by listening to the song. This technique also works on Hot Potatoes with a few add-ons into the source files. In “The Ghetto” the line “As the snow flies” becomes “as the crow flies” or “the child needs a helping hand”, a bit morbid, I confess, “the child plays in a reggae band.”

A last example shows how I used film and music together. In the movie Paris Texas there is a longer passage in which one guy tells a story about a couple falling in love and then falling out of love. They become dependent and the whole romance story and so on. But it’s really nice because the dialog is also featured in the soundtrack and you can just play the eight minute track as a listening comprehension and then show the film or read parts of the story. It’s quite an interesting story, which fits in well when talking about family or relationships or dependency in relationships.

I hope that these examples have provided some ideas on how to work with songs. Music and film bring a change of pace into the classroom and they lighten up our teaching. Trying to find songs that our students might listen to at home or films that they talk about in the breaks can be rewarding for both them and us. It’s quite a difficult task but it pays off.

Ein weiteres “bekanntes Feature” von Web 2.0 Applikationen ist die “share” Funktion – inzwischen gibt es auf mindomo einen Pool vonca. 3000 Maps, da sind sicherlich einige dabei, die für Illustrationszwecke für den Unterricht verwendet werden können. Mindmaps eignen sich auch für brainstorming…wie ich in einem früheren Post schon beschrieben habe.
